CHAPTER 14

REESE

After seeing Eddleman in that poorly state, Reese couldn’t get it out of his head. And sitting in a car with Rooney wasn’t making his mood any better.

“I’m telling you, man, you don’t know what you’re missing,” said Rooney, biting into a jelly-filled donut. “These are the best in the city.”

“So, I’ve heard.”

“Why are you in a bad mood? You’re always in a bad mood.” Rooney bit into the donut and sent a drip of jelly down his chin.

“Don’t you get tired of this? I swear, if something doesn’t happen soon, I’m going to die of boredom. I should be working a case, anything. This sucks. I don’t see how you do it all day.” He shifted in his seat. “My butt feels like it’s falling asleep. I’m so sick of sitting here.”

“Sorry. I know it’s not the best, most exciting job in the world, but I like it. And it’s not my fault that you’re here.”

“It’s not mine either. It’s not like I asked to be shot. It’s not like I did anything wrong. Yet, I feel like I’m being punished.”

“So? Tell the boss that. Otherwise, stop taking it out on me. All I hear is how boring it is, how you don’t get enough action. I liked my job fine until you came along, and now even I’m starting to second-guess it.”

“How do you do it? Don’t you want action?”

“I did. When I first got on the force, yes. But my wife and kids mean too much to me. I’m okay with this boring job. It brings me home at night. And there’s action now and then. Meanwhile, I’m earning pay same as you.”

“I guess. I didn’t know you were married.”

“You never asked.”

Reese realized that he had only been thinking about himself. “Sorry. How about you drive me back to the station, and I have that talk with the chief?”

“That sounds better than sitting here listening to you complain.” Rooney started the car and drove up the street to turn around and head back to the station.

Reese had not tried to stand up for himself since Chief’s insistence that he work with Rooney, but he knew if he was going to get in any of the action or learn anything more about Casey Young’s murder, he had to fight for it.

As Rooney brought them closer to the station, he felt his nerves start to go on edge. He could hear the man’s voice already in his head, that gruff-sounding disapproval he knew he was about to face.

But he had to do something. He was in a fight for his own sanity.

When they got to the station, Rooney dropped him off at the door. “I’ll be in the office doing paperwork from our stops. Let me know what he says.”

“Thanks, Rooney. You know, I understand you a bit better. You’re a good man.”

“Thanks.” Rooney drove around through the sally port and to the back lot where they usually parked as Reese started to the door.

When he got to the building’s entrance, he could already see Chief Riles sipping coffee.
